How to Sell Notion Templates Online (Step-by-Step Guide)

Notion templates are one of the best first digital products to sell. They solve an immediate, visible problem (someone's workspace is a mess), they're fast to create if you use Notion regularly, and buyers understand exactly what they're getting before they buy.

Here's my complete process — from building the template to getting your first sale.

Step 1: Build a Template People Will Actually Buy

The templates that sell well solve a specific problem for a specific type of person. Not "a productivity system" — but "a content calendar for freelance writers who manage 3–5 clients."

How to find your template idea:

Search Reddit. Go to r/Notion, r/productivity, r/freelance, or whatever subreddit matches your niche, and search for "template" or "looking for." You'll find threads where people are asking for exactly the kind of template you could build. Those are your product ideas.

Search Etsy and Gumroad for "Notion template [your niche]." Look at which ones have reviews — that's proof of demand. Read the reviews to understand what buyers valued most and what they wished was included or done differently.

Building it:

Build the template for yourself first, as if you were the user. Make sure every database is linked properly, every formula works, and every page has explanatory text for someone who didn't build it. Clear labels and short description notes inside the template dramatically reduce buyer confusion and support requests.

When you're done, duplicate the template into a fresh Notion account (or a test workspace) to make sure the new user experience is clean.

Step 2: Set the Right Price

Most first-time Notion template sellers price too low. I see $3 and $5 templates constantly — they almost always produce worse results than $15–$35 templates.

Here's why higher prices work: buyers who pay $29 for a Notion template are committed to using it. They'll put in the effort to implement it. They'll get results. They'll leave positive reviews or recommend it to friends.

Buyers who paid $5 for a template often don't even open it.

• Comprehensive system (3–5 linked databases, workflow guide included): $25–$45
• Full business or life operating system (everything): $47–$97

Step 3: Package It Properly

A template listing needs four things to convert:

1. A clear title that names the audience and the benefit. Bad: "Notion Productivity Template" Good: "Notion Client Management System for Freelancers — Projects, Invoices & Contacts in One Place"

2. A thumbnail that shows the template. Screenshot your best-looking view, clean it up in Canva, add a simple text overlay with the product name. People are buying a visual tool — show them what it looks like.

3. A description that focuses on transformation, not features. Don't list the databases. Explain what their work life will look like after they implement this. What will they stop struggling with? How many hours per week will this save?

4. What's included, clearly listed. After the benefits, list exactly what they get: number of databases, included templates, bonus files, and whether you include a setup guide.

Step 4: List on MadeThis

Reddit:

Go to subreddits where your ideal buyer hangs out (r/Notion, r/freelance, r/productivity, niche-specific subreddits).

The rule on Reddit: be genuinely helpful first. Answer questions, share advice, contribute real value. When the moment comes to mention your template, it should feel natural — "I actually built a template for exactly this, happy to share."

Don't post promotional links in your first interactions. Build a credible comment history first. Then, when someone asks a question your template solves, you can share it.

The First Sale Timeline

Realistically: if you list a solid template today and start promoting on Pinterest and Reddit this week, you might get your first sale within 1–2 weeks if you're actively participating. Pinterest takes longer to build momentum — 3–4 months before you see consistent organic traffic from it.

The pattern I've observed: Reddit drives early sales from targeted community engagement. Pinterest drives compounding passive traffic over time. The two together are a strong long-term strategy for a low-maintenance digital product.
