How to Create and Sell Notion Templates (Complete Guide)

Notion templates are one of my favorite digital product recommendations for first-time creators. Here's why: they're fast to build, they solve real problems that people pay for, and the barriers to entry are low compared to most other digital product types.

Step 1: Find a Template Idea That Sells

The templates that sell well solve specific, outcome-focused problems. Here's how to think about it:

Avoid: "A life planner" (too vague)
Instead: "A Notion template for freelancers to track clients, invoices, and projects in one place"

Avoid: "A business template" (who is the buyer?)
Instead: "A solopreneur OS for managing content, products, and income tracking"

Good research approach: spend time on Etsy's Notion category. Sort by bestsellers. Look at what's selling, what the titles say, and what the descriptions emphasize. You're not copying — you're understanding what buyers want.

High-performing Notion template niches include:

• Job seeker tracking and application system
• Personal finance and budget tracking
• Student study planner and note system

Step 2: Design Your Template

Open Notion and build the template you'd want to use yourself. This is important: the best templates are built by people who actually understand the workflow they're solving for.

Template building principles:

Make it immediately useful out of the box. Include sample data. Show them exactly how to use it. A template that ships empty and requires significant setup before it provides value will get negative reviews.

Include documentation. A short video walkthrough (even just a 3-minute Loom recording) or a written quick-start guide dramatically improves the buyer experience and reduces refund requests.

Design for non-Notion-experts. Your buyers aren't power users. Use simple, clear database names. Don't use obscure Notion features without explanation. The template should feel accessible, not clever.

Test it. Duplicate your own template into a fresh Notion account and go through it as a new user would. Fix everything that confuses you.

Step 3: Create the Template Link

To share your Notion template, you need to publish a "template duplication link." Here's how:

1. In your Notion template workspace, click "Share" in the top right
2. Make it public (allow anyone with the link to view)
3. Look for the "Template button" option and enable it
4. Share the link — when buyers click it, they get a personal copy

The template link is what you sell. The buyer receives this link after purchase, clicks it, and gets a duplicate of your template in their own Notion workspace.

Most beginners underprice. Here's a better framework:

• Medium templates (multi-page system, several databases): $17–$37
• Comprehensive operating systems (10+ pages, full business workflow): $47–$97+

The question isn't "what's my time worth?" The question is "what is this system worth to someone who would otherwise spend 20 hours building it themselves?" Price against that value.

If you're brand new and have no reviews, start at the lower end and raise your price as reviews accumulate.

Step 5: Where to Sell

Etsy is the default marketplace for Notion templates, and for good reason — there's significant organic traffic and buyer intent. But Etsy takes 6–8% in fees, and you don't own the customer relationship.

Your own store is better long-term. You keep the full price, own the email list, and can build direct relationships with buyers. The tradeoff is you need to drive your own traffic.

The best approach for most creators: list on Etsy to benefit from their existing traffic, but also build your own store for higher margin sales and email capture.

Realistic Income Expectations

A single well-positioned, well-reviewed Notion template on Etsy can generate $200–$800/month in passive income. A small collection of 5–10 templates can hit $1,000–$3,000/month.

Getting there takes 60–90 days of building the product, optimizing listings, and building initial reviews through active promotion.
