Beehiiv Review 2027: The Newsletter Platform That's Changing the Creator Economy

In 2021, Beehiiv didn't exist. In 2027, it's one of the fastest-growing newsletter platforms in the world.

I've been watching it closely since its launch, and I spent three months testing it thoroughly before deciding whether to migrate my newsletter. Here's what I found — including some things the glowing reviews tend to skip.

What Beehiiv Is

Beehiiv is a newsletter platform built specifically for growth-focused creators and media companies. It was founded by former Morning Brew team members who understood — from the inside — what it takes to build a newsletter into a real media business.

The core product: write and send newsletters, grow your subscriber list, monetize via ads and paid subscriptions, and track everything with analytics that actually matter.

What Beehiiv Gets Right

The editor is genuinely excellent. Beehiiv's writing experience is the best I've used in any newsletter tool. The editor is clean, the formatting options are robust without being overwhelming, and the mobile preview is accurate. Writing in Beehiiv feels like writing — not fighting a WYSIWYG editor.

Built-in audience growth tools. Beehiiv has growth mechanics built natively into the platform:

• Referral program: Subscribers can refer friends for rewards, powered by Beehiiv's own referral system (no third-party tool needed)
• Recommendation network: Beehiiv newsletters can recommend each other's newsletters to new subscribers after opt-in
• Boosts program: Pay to appear as a recommendation on other newsletters — a paid subscriber acquisition channel

These growth features aren't available as native tools in ConvertKit or Mailchimp.

Monetization options: Beehiiv has a built-in ad network (connect with brand sponsors), paid subscriptions (charge readers a monthly or annual fee), and a premium content feature (put some content behind a paywall). For newsletter-first creators, this is significant — you can generate revenue directly from your newsletter without a separate products platform.

The analytics are detailed. Open rates, click rates, subscriber growth over time, subscriber acquisition source breakdown, unsubscribe reasons. The data is comprehensive and actually interpretable.

The free plan is generous. Up to 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends on the free tier — significantly more generous than most competitors.

Where Beehiiv Falls Short

The automation and tagging are limited. ConvertKit's visual automation builder is far more sophisticated than Beehiiv's current automation tools. If you want complex behavioral triggers — tag someone based on which link they clicked, then route them into a specific sequence — Beehiiv can't match ConvertKit's depth here.

Not a full CRM or product platform. Beehiiv is a newsletter tool. It doesn't natively sell digital files, courses, or physical products. If you want a sales platform, you're adding another tool.

The Scale plan is expensive. Beehiiv's pricing:

• Launch ($39/month): up to 10,000 subscribers, monetization features
• Grow ($99/month): up to 100,000 subscribers, advanced analytics, custom domains
• Scale (custom pricing): large list features

The free tier is generous, but the jump to $99/month is steep for early-stage creators.

Customer support is limited at lower tiers. Priority support is a Scale-plan feature. Free and Launch users rely on the knowledge base and community forum, which are good but not always sufficient for urgent issues.

The recommendation network creates noise. Getting new subscribers through the recommendation network (where Beehiiv puts you in front of subscribers opting in to other newsletters) sounds great — but the quality of these subscribers varies. They opted in to a different newsletter; your content may not match their expectations. Watch engagement rates carefully if you use this feature.

Who Beehiiv Is Best For

Newsletter-first creators who want the writing experience, growth mechanics, and monetization options all in one place. If your primary content format is a newsletter and you want to monetize via ads and paid subscriptions (not just product sales), Beehiiv is very strong.

Creators building media businesses. Beehiiv is the platform that looks most like Substack but with better growth tools and more business features.

Creators who want referral mechanics without a third-party tool. Building a referral program on ConvertKit requires SparkLoop or a custom integration. Beehiiv does it natively.

Beehiiv vs. ConvertKit vs. Integrated Options

My Verdict

Beehiiv is genuinely impressive. The writing experience is the best available. The growth mechanics are differentiated. The ad monetization and paid subscription options are valuable if newsletter revenue (not product revenue) is your goal.

It's not a do-everything platform. If you need deep email automation or a strong product selling backend, you'll end up combining tools.

Whether you choose Beehiiv, ConvertKit, or something more integrated — the email list remains the most important asset in your online business. Whatever drives those emails → product conversions is the combination worth investing in.
