It took me about 20 minutes to set up, I made my first sale within a week, and I thought it was the best thing I'd ever found. Simple, fast, and it just worked.
That was three years ago. A lot has changed — both with Gumroad and with my expectations for what a digital product platform should do.
Here's my honest 2027 review, based on nearly two years of using the platform, 400+ sales, and eventually deciding to switch.
What Gumroad Is and Who It's Built For
Gumroad is a digital product selling platform built for simplicity. You upload a file, set a price, and share a link. Someone clicks that link, pays, and gets the file. That's the core product.
It was launched in 2011 and remains one of the most recognizable names in the digital product space. The brand has real credibility, and the simplicity of the product is genuine — you really can be selling in under an hour.
The typical Gumroad user: a creator selling a standalone product, often their first product, who values ease of setup over advanced features.
What Gumroad Gets Right
Immediate setup: No approval process, no application, no waiting period. Create an account, upload a product, share the link. Done.
Clean buyer experience: The Gumroad checkout page is simple and professional. Buyers don't feel like they're buying from a sketchy website.
Discover exposure: Gumroad has a built-in Discover marketplace where buyers browse for products. This can generate passive sales for creators with quality products, especially in popular niches.
Free to start: Gumroad doesn't charge a monthly fee. They take a percentage of each sale. This makes it zero-risk to start.
Email list building: Gumroad automatically collects buyer emails, which you can use for future launches. This is a genuinely valuable feature that many platforms don't include.
Where Gumroad Falls Short in 2027
The fees are higher than they look. Gumroad charges a flat 10% transaction fee on every sale plus payment processing fees. For a $27 product, that's $2.70 to Gumroad plus ~$1 to Stripe. On $10,000/month in revenue, you're paying $1,000+ to Gumroad alone.

Limited customization. Gumroad product pages are functional but not particularly beautiful or brand-consistent. You can add images and text, but the layout is rigid. Limited product types. Gumroad handles file downloads, courses (basic), and memberships well. More complex product configurations (bundles, tiered access, community integration) are limited.
The Fee Math: Why It Matters at Scale
If you're selling $200/month, Gumroad's 10% fee is $20. Negligible.
If you're selling $5,000/month, that fee is $500 per month — $6,000 per year — on top of payment processing costs.
At scale, fees matter enormously. When I ran the numbers after 12 months on Gumroad, I realized I was paying significantly more than I would on alternative platforms that charge a flat monthly fee and lower per-sale rates.
This is the most common reason creators switch away from Gumroad: the fee model works when you're small and becomes painful when you grow.
Who Should Use Gumroad in 2027
Gumroad still makes sense for a specific type of creator:
Absolute beginners with zero technical knowledge who want to sell one product immediately without any setup friction. Gumroad is genuinely the fastest path from "idea" to "link to share."
Creators testing product-market fit who want to validate an idea before investing in a more sophisticated setup. Sell the first 10 copies on Gumroad, then migrate to a better platform once you've proven the product.
Creators who want Discover exposure. If your product is a good fit for the Gumroad marketplace and you want passive discovery traffic, that's a real benefit.
What I Switched To — And Why
