The Twitter/X Strategy That Actually Grows an Online Business in 2027

I almost gave up on Twitter/X three times.

The first six months were brutal: posting every day, getting maybe a handful of likes, watching larger accounts blow up while mine flatlined. I tried scheduling tools, hashtag strategies, posting at "peak times." Nothing moved the needle.

Then I changed my approach completely — and in the following eight months, I built an audience of 12,000 followers and drove enough traffic to generate real revenue from my digital products.

Here's what actually works in 2027.

Why Twitter/X Still Matters for Online Businesses

Every year, someone declares Twitter/X dead. It never quite is.

For online business owners — especially those selling digital products, courses, or services — Twitter/X remains one of the best platforms for a specific reason: the audience self-selects for people who think about business, money, and self-improvement.

If you're selling anything in the creator economy, productivity, entrepreneurship, AI tools, finance, or professional development space, your buyers are on Twitter/X. Instagram has lifestyle. TikTok has entertainment. Twitter/X has the people who read business threads at 7 AM and buy $97 digital products.

The audience is smaller than TikTok but more commercially valuable. That matters when you're a one-person business.

The Big Mistake: Optimizing for Follower Count

Most Twitter/X growth advice focuses on follower count. This is the wrong metric.

Follower count tells you how many people clicked a button once. Engagement rate tells you how many of those people are actually paying attention. And revenue per follower tells you whether any of this is working as a business.

I've seen accounts with 50K followers making less than accounts with 5K followers — because the 5K audience was built around a specific business niche and the 50K was built chasing viral content.

Optimize for the right followers, not more followers. One relevant, engaged follower is worth 100 people who followed you because of a generic motivational tweet.

The Content Framework That Builds Business Audiences

After 18 months of testing, I've simplified my content strategy to three content types:

Long-form threads (2x per week): These are your highest-value posts. A 10–15 tweet thread that teaches something specific — a process, a case study, a breakdown — gets saved and reshared. Threads also get the longest read time, which tells the algorithm your content is valuable.

Hot takes and observations (3x per week): Short, single tweets with a specific opinion or counterintuitive insight. "Everyone says you need a big audience to make money online. I made my first $1,000 with 400 followers. Here's what actually matters." These drive engagement and expand reach.

Personal progress updates (1–2x per week): Showing your actual results builds credibility and trust. Monthly revenue numbers, milestone moments, behind-the-scenes challenges. People follow journeys.

This mix keeps the account interesting, drives engagement across different types of content, and positions you as someone worth following for business insights.

The Reply Strategy Nobody Talks About

The fastest way to grow on Twitter/X isn't posting more — it's replying smarter.

I spend 20 minutes every morning replying to tweets from large accounts in my niche — accounts with 50K–500K followers. Not generic replies. Substantive ones: adding a counter-argument, sharing a relevant data point, telling a short story that extends their point.

When you reply well on a post that gets a lot of engagement, the algorithm surfaces your reply to everyone who engages with that post. That's free exposure to a highly relevant audience. A single strong reply on the right post has brought me 300+ followers in a day.

The rule: only reply when you can add real value. "Great thread!" doesn't work. "I had the opposite experience — here's what I found" does.

Linking Out: How to Drive Traffic Without Getting Penalized

Twitter/X's algorithm deprioritizes tweets with external links — it wants users to stay on platform.

The workaround: post your content without the link, wait for initial engagement to build, then add the link in a reply. This is the most common hack, and it still works in 2027.

Alternatively, use threads to deliver value in-platform and put the link at the end, after you've already captured the reader's attention. By the time they're on tweet 10 of a thread, the algorithm has already decided to promote the thread — the link at the end doesn't hurt you.

My bio link goes to my email opt-in page, not my products page. The email list is where buyers actually come from. Social traffic converts better when it goes to an opt-in page first, then gets nurtured via email before hitting a product.

For a deeper breakdown of how I use email to convert Twitter followers into buyers, see my MadeThis review — it covers the full funnel setup.

What to Post When You Have Nothing to Say

Every creator hits the blank-page problem. Here's how I solve it:

Teach something you learned this week. Even if it feels obvious to you, it's new to most of your audience.

Share a mistake and what it cost you. Failure content performs disproportionately well because it's honest and rare.

Take a popular belief in your niche and push back on it. Contrarian takes generate discussion, which drives engagement.

Document a decision you made. Why did you choose one tool over another? Why did you raise your price? Decision-making content builds authority.

The creative block is usually about perfectionism. Lower the standard: ship the tweet even if it's not your best work. Consistency matters more than any single post.

Converting Followers Into Buyers

Here's the funnel I use to take Twitter followers to product sales:

  1. Bio link → email opt-in page with a free lead magnet
  2. Email welcome sequence (3–5 emails) delivers value and introduces my products
  3. Product link appears naturally in email #4 or #5 after trust is established

I almost never send someone directly from a tweet to a product page. The conversion rate on cold social traffic is low. The conversion rate on a warm email subscriber who's received 3 value emails is much higher.

The products live on MadeThis, which handles checkout, delivery, and access automatically. That means when someone buys at 2 AM from a tweet they found via search, the whole transaction completes without me being involved.

If you're building a Twitter/X audience and want a clean, no-friction product setup to back it up, start your online business with MadeThis. The platform + an engaged Twitter following is one of the most effective combinations for a one-person business.

Post with intention. Reply with value. Build the email list. Sell the right product to the right audience.
