The Email List I Wish I Had Built Sooner (And How to Start Today)
For the first two years of building my online business, I completely ignored email. I was building on TikTok. Growing my Pinterest account. Getting traffic to my blog. All of those things worked — but they had a ceiling I didn't understand until the algorithms shifted and traffic dropped 40% in a single month.
That was the moment I understood something I'd been told a dozen times but hadn't actually internalized: social media audiences are borrowed. An email list is owned.

If I had started my email list on day one instead of year three, I'd be somewhere very different right now. Here's why — and how you can start today without making the same mistake I made.
The Rented Audience Problem
When you build a following on TikTok, you don't own it. TikTok does. They can change the algorithm, reduce your organic reach, ban your account, or simply decline. All the work you put into building that following is at the mercy of a platform's business decisions.
When the algorithm changed in late 2026, my TikTok reach dropped by half. I hadn't posted differently. My content quality hadn't changed. The platform just redistributed reach to other content types. There was nothing I could do.
My email list — which I'd finally started building six months earlier — kept generating income through that entire disruption. Because those 1,200 subscribers had opted in to hear from me directly. No algorithm stood between my message and their inbox.
That's the difference. And I wish I'd understood it in year one.
What I Would Have Done Differently
If I was starting over from scratch tomorrow, here's what my day-one list would look like:
Step 1: Create one genuinely useful free thing
Not a generic PDF. A specific, useful resource tied to the exact problem my target reader has. For me, that would have been a digital product launch checklist — one page, immediately actionable, valuable even for someone who never buys anything.
This takes one afternoon. It doesn't need to be polished. It just needs to be genuinely useful.
Step 2: Host it as a free product on MadeThis
I'd set up a free product on MadeThis with email capture enabled. Anyone who downloads the freebie gives me their email. MadeThis handles the delivery automatically.
I didn't do this for two years because I thought it was complicated. It took me 45 minutes the first time I actually set it up. That's 45 minutes I could have spent on day one.
Step 3: Mention the free download everywhere
On every blog post. In every TikTok video. In my Pinterest bio. "Free download — link in bio." That's it. No complicated funnel, no fancy opt-in page. Just a consistent reminder that the free thing exists.
Step 4: Write a 5-email welcome sequence before anyone's in it
This is the part most people skip, and it's the part that makes the difference. Write the sequence first, before you have subscribers. Because once the list starts growing, you'll be too busy to write it — and the subscribers you have will go through a blank sequence and never buy anything.
I have a detailed welcome sequence template that you can use as a starting point.
The Moment It Clicked for Me
The first time I sent a promotional email to my list — about 400 subscribers at the time — I made $118 in one afternoon. Not from a launch. Just a simple email saying "hey, I built this thing, here it is."
I had been posting on TikTok for eight months to drive $118 in sales from a single product. And a 400-person email list did the same thing with a 20-minute email.
That asymmetry is why I talk about email constantly now. The leverage is real and it compounds.
What Your List Will Feel Like at Each Stage
0–100 subscribers: Almost nothing. It's discouraging. Keep going.
100–300 subscribers: First sales from the welcome sequence. The model starts to feel real.
300–1,000 subscribers: Clear patterns emerge. You start seeing which emails convert, which don't, which products resonate.
1,000–3,000 subscribers: Launches start mattering. A good launch week can generate $500–$2,000 from this range.
3,000+ subscribers: Consistent income. At this scale, a monthly promotional email is worth $300–$800 on autopilot.
Every stage requires the same thing: consistent content, a quality lead magnet, and a store that converts when people click.
The First Step You Can Take Today
You don't need to have a product to start. You can build the list first and create the product later.
Start with the free lead magnet. Even a simple "10 ideas for your first digital product" list in a Google Doc converted to PDF is enough. Host it on MadeThis, add the opt-in form link to whatever content channels you're already using, and start sending.
The list you build this month will pay you back for years. The list you don't build won't.
When you're ready to go from "free lead magnet" to "paid products," my post on creating your first digital product in 24 hours is where I'd start.
And for the store — the place where your lead magnets live, your products sell, and your email list gets built — MadeThis is what I use. It's built for exactly this kind of business: one person, a handful of products, and an email list that grows over time.
Start today. Not when you have a perfect product. Not when you have a perfect plan. Today.
