How I Monetize My Email List With Digital Products (The Full System)

How I Monetize My Email List With Digital Products (The Full System)

My email list has 4,200 subscribers. It generates more revenue per month than my TikTok, Pinterest, and Instagram combined — despite getting a fraction of the attention I give to social content.

That's not a coincidence. Email is a different kind of asset. When someone gives you their email address, they're saying "I want to hear from you." That level of opt-in doesn't exist on any social platform. And when paired with digital products, it becomes one of the most reliable income systems I've built.

Here's the full system I use.

How I Built the List in the First Place

Before I could monetize anything, I needed subscribers. My list grew from three primary sources:

1. Free lead magnets delivered through MadeThis My most effective list-builder has been a free digital product — a "digital product ideas" checklist — available at no cost in exchange for an email. MadeThis lets you deliver free downloads with email capture built in. When someone downloads the freebie, they're in my list.

2. Blog content with embedded opt-in forms Every blog post I write includes an in-content prompt to download the free checklist. Organic search traffic converts well because readers are already researching the topic.

3. TikTok and short-form video I mention the free download in videos about digital products. "The checklist is in bio" is a constant phrase in my content. Social is the top-of-funnel; email is where the relationship becomes real.

The Product Ladder

To monetize an email list effectively, you need a product ladder — a range of products at different price points that meet subscribers at different levels of readiness.

Mine looks like this:

  • Free: Digital product ideas checklist ($0, email required)
  • Entry level: Notion productivity template ($9)
  • Mid-tier: Email templates pack ($27)
  • Core product: Full digital product launch system ($67)
  • Premium: 1:1 consulting session ($197)

Not everyone on my list buys the $67 product. But almost everyone who bought the $197 session had first bought one of the lower-tier products. The ladder builds trust before asking for a bigger commitment.

How Delivery Works With MadeThis

Every product on my ladder lives in my MadeThis store. When someone buys, MadeThis handles:

  • Secure download delivery
  • Receipt and confirmation emails
  • Customer records and purchase history

This is the infrastructure that makes an email-based product business possible without a tech team. Before MadeThis, I was manually emailing people download links. That's not scalable.

Now I focus on the content and the email sequences. MadeThis handles the rest.

The Email Sequence Structure

Here's how my welcome-to-purchase sequence works for a new email subscriber:

Email 1 (immediate): Deliver the free resource + warm welcome. No selling. Just value.

Email 2 (day 3): Share a useful piece of content related to why they opted in. Brief mention that I also have paid products when they're ready.

Email 3 (day 7): First soft offer. "For people who want to go deeper, here's the template I built for [the problem]." Direct link to the $9 entry-level product.

Email 4 (day 14): Case study or behind-the-scenes. Show results. Link to the mid-tier product.

Email 5 (day 21): The "full system" pitch. This is when I introduce the $67 product to people who haven't bought anything yet.

Ongoing: Monthly newsletter with new content, product updates, and one promotional email per month.

What Actually Converts

The emails that convert best aren't the ones that sell hardest. They're the ones that:

  • Tell a specific story about a problem I had and how a product solved it
  • Include a real number (revenue, time saved, results)
  • Have a single clear link to one product

Multi-product emails almost never outperform single-product emails. Focus the attention.

Revenue Breakdown

For context, here's approximately how my list generates income each month (average across 2027):

  • Monthly newsletter promotional email: $180–$320
  • Ongoing automated sequence purchases: $400–$600
  • Launch-specific campaigns (3–4 per year): $1,200–$2,400 per launch

That's $6,000–$12,000 per year from a list of 4,200 people with minimal ongoing effort after the initial setup.

The key insight: most of that comes from the automated sequences, not from me actively selling. I set it up once; it runs indefinitely.

Getting Started If You Have Zero Subscribers

If you're starting from scratch, the quickest path is:

  1. Build a free lead magnet (a checklist, guide, or template)
  2. Set it up on MadeThis with email capture enabled
  3. Promote the freebie through whatever channel you're already using (blog, TikTok, Pinterest)
  4. Write a 5-email welcome sequence before you've sent a single subscriber through it

You can learn exactly how to build that first digital product in my post on creating your first digital product in 24 hours. The email-to-product system compounds over time — start now, even with nothing built yet.

For the store side, MadeThis is what I'd use. The pricing is reasonable and the setup is genuinely fast. It's the infrastructure that makes everything else in this system work.

An email list is the one asset that no algorithm can take from you. Build it, treat it well, and let digital products do the monetizing.
