I've tested more digital product platforms than I should have. Here's my current breakdown of the best options heading into 2027 — honest about where each one wins and where each one falls short.

What to Look For in a Digital Product Platform

Before the rankings, here's the framework I use:

Fees: What percentage of each sale does the platform take, and what's the monthly cost? The math matters a lot once you're doing volume.

Ease of use: How fast can you go from "I want to sell something" to "my store is live"? Complexity kills momentum.

Digital delivery: Does the platform handle automatic file delivery on purchase, or do you need to manage that manually? (Spoiler: you want automatic delivery.)

AI tools: Does the platform help you with the parts of the business that aren't just storing files — like writing copy, driving traffic, and growing your business?

Long-term upside: Is this a platform you can scale on, or will you outgrow it and face a painful migration?

The Best Platforms in 2027

1. MadeThis — Best for Solo Creators Building From Scratch

Free plan: Yes (genuinely useful, not crippled) Transaction fees: Low, varies by plan AI features: Yes — built-in AI co-founder (DAN) for copy, strategy, and support Best for: Digital products, courses, services

MadeThis is the platform I use and the one I recommend most often to people starting out. Here's what separates it:

The AI co-founder is real. It's not a chatbot bolted onto a checkout tool. It helps you write product descriptions, think through pricing, and answer customer questions. For a solo creator with no team, that strategic support is enormous.

The built-in SEO blog is the other differentiator. Most platforms in this category require you to bolt on a separate blog if you want organic search traffic. MadeThis treats content and commerce as one system — which is how serious solo businesses actually operate.

The free plan lets you start with zero financial risk. Make your first sales, prove the model works, then upgrade when your revenue justifies it.

Where it falls short: No native email marketing (you'll integrate a third-party tool) and no built-in buyer marketplace. You drive your own traffic.

2. Gumroad — Best for Fast Launches With an Existing Audience

Free plan: Yes (10% transaction fee) AI features: None Best for: Quick product listings, single product launches, creators with audiences

Gumroad has a loyal following for a reason: it's the fastest way to get a digital product in front of buyers. Upload, price, share a link. Done in 30 minutes.

The 10% fee on the free plan is real, though. And there's no SEO engine, no AI, no real storefront. Gumroad is a product listing tool, not a business platform. If you're starting from scratch and need your platform to help you grow, you'll hit its ceiling quickly.

Best use case: you have an audience somewhere (newsletter, social media) and want a checkout layer for one product.

3. Shopify — Best for Physical + Digital Hybrid Stores

Monthly cost: From $29/month (+ apps + transaction fees) AI features: Third-party apps only Best for: Physical product businesses with digital add-ons

Shopify is the undisputed leader for physical e-commerce. If your business is primarily physical products, Shopify wins. For pure digital products, though, it's expensive and overcomplicated — digital delivery requires a third-party app, and the overall cost structure at launch is higher than most alternatives.

Not recommended as a starting point for digital-only creators.

4. Teachable — Best for Structured Online Courses

Free plan: Yes (10% fee) AI features: Limited Best for: Multi-module courses with progress tracking, quizzes, and certificates

If you're building a structured course with modules, quizzes, completion certificates, and a polished student experience, Teachable is the category leader. It's purpose-built for educational content.

For everything else — ebooks, templates, guides, services — it's overkill.

5. Payhip — Best for Simplicity on a Budget

Free plan: Yes (5% transaction fee) AI features: None Best for: Beginners who want a no-frills checkout

Payhip is clean and simple. Lower transaction fees than Gumroad on the free plan, easy to use, and supports multiple product types. The tradeoff: no AI, no SEO tools, no storefront builder. It's a payment gateway with a product page, not a business platform.

Good for getting started; not the platform you want to be on long-term.

My Recommendation

For most people reading this: start with MadeThis. Free plan, real AI assistance, built-in SEO blog. It's the platform designed for the exact situation you're in — building from scratch without a team.

If you outgrow it (because you build a massive course business that needs Teachable's student experience, or a physical product line that needs Shopify's inventory management), you'll be in a position to make that call from a place of strength.

Start with what gets you moving. Optimize later.
