Why I Switched From Gumroad to MadeThis (And Haven't Looked Back)

I used Gumroad for about five months before I switched. This post isn't a Gumroad takedown — it served me well for the early stages. But there came a point where the platform was actively limiting what I could do, and switching to MadeThis.com felt like removing a ceiling.

Here's the honest comparison: what Gumroad does well, where it fell short for me, and what the switch actually changed.

What I Liked About Gumroad

Let me be fair. Gumroad has real strengths and it's why so many creators default to it.

Zero setup friction. You can have a product listed and a checkout working in under an hour. No configuration, no code, no friction. For getting a first product live, it's hard to beat.

Brand recognition. Buyers have heard of it. That familiarity removes a small amount of purchase skepticism — people know what to expect from a Gumroad checkout.

Discovery (sort of). Gumroad has a built-in marketplace that occasionally surfaces products to new buyers. I got a handful of sales this way. Not a lot, but some.

The free plan. You can start for free, which lowers the barrier to entry considerably. Gumroad takes a cut of each sale, but you don't pay a monthly fee.

Where Gumroad Started Falling Short

After about three months, I hit a set of limitations that started to compound.

The fee structure was eating into margins at scale. Gumroad's free plan takes 10% of each transaction. On a $17 sale, that's $1.70. On a $25 sale, that's $2.50. Plus payment processing. When I was doing 40–50 sales per month, I was losing $70–$100 per month just to platform fees. That's real money.

When I looked at what I'd pay on MadeThis, the math was different — the platform takes a smaller cut, and the fee structure is more predictable as you grow.

The product pages looked like everyone else's product pages. Gumroad has a standard template and there's limited room to differentiate. My page looked like the product pages of thousands of other creators. That's fine when you're starting out; it's less fine when you're trying to build a recognizable brand.

No email list integration that matched what I was building. I was growing my email list separately and wanted my product sales to feed into it automatically. Gumroad's native integration options were limited and required workarounds.

No AI tools. This wasn't something I was even thinking about when I started, but after switching to MadeThis, the built-in AI assistance for product descriptions, listing copy, and business strategy has saved me real hours per month.

What's Better on MadeThis

The AI-powered product copy. When I list a new product on MadeThis, the AI helps me write the description, headline, and bullet points based on what I tell it about the product and the buyer. What would take me two hours of staring at a blank screen takes twenty minutes of guided input and editing.

The product pages. Cleaner, more customizable, and more professional-looking. Buyers who land on my product page now are landing on something that looks like it belongs to a real business, not a generic marketplace template.

Fewer fees eating my revenue. I'm keeping more of each sale. The difference feels small per transaction and meaningful per month.

The full business toolset. MadeThis isn't just a checkout tool — it's designed to be the operating system for a digital product business. Store, products, AI co-founder, analytics — it's all integrated. I was previously duct-taping together four different tools. Now it's one.

What to Expect From the Switch

The migration itself wasn't painful. I re-uploaded all my products, rewrote the descriptions (better this time, with AI help), and redirected my Pinterest pins to the new URLs. Took about a day.

I didn't lose any traffic because my traffic was coming from my own sources (blog, Pinterest) — not from Gumroad's marketplace. If Gumroad's marketplace was a significant traffic driver for you, factor that in.

The first week after switching, I was on edge waiting to see if the checkout would work smoothly, if file delivery would be reliable. It was. No complaints.

My Honest Take

Gumroad is a solid starting point. If you're on day one and just need to get something live, it works. I'm not going to tell you to avoid it.

But if you're a few months in and feeling like your platform is a ceiling rather than a foundation — limited customization, high fees, no AI tools — that's a sign it might be time to move.

MadeThis is where I am now, and I genuinely don't think about switching anymore. When the tool you use to run your business disappears from your mind because it just works, that's the right tool.
