When I first started selling digital products, Etsy was the obvious choice. It has a massive built-in audience, the setup takes about 20 minutes, and my products were live in a marketplace with millions of shoppers before I'd had a chance to do any marketing. For a beginner, that matters.

I made real money on Etsy. My first eight months there, I averaged around $600/month from a handful of PDF guides and a Notion template pack. I wasn't complaining.

But the longer I used the platform, the more I felt something was off.

The Problems I Kept Running Into

The fee structure eats your margin.

Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee on every sale, plus a $0.20 listing fee every time a product is listed or renewed, plus payment processing fees. On a $17 product, I was keeping somewhere around $14 after fees. That's fine — but it adds up.

More importantly, Etsy's fees compound in a way that hurts as you scale. The more you sell, the more you're paying them, with no volume discounts or loyalty tier. I started feeling like I was building their business more than mine.

This one is harder to quantify, but I felt it clearly. When someone bought something on Etsy, the transaction was between them and Etsy. I could see their first name and order number. That was it.

The SEO game was brutal and unpredictable.

Etsy has its own internal search algorithm, and cracking it requires constant attention to tags, listing titles, photos, and renewal timing. I spent real hours optimizing listings. Then one algorithm update could drop your best listing from the front page overnight.

You're renting space in someone else's search engine. You have no control and no durable asset.

Their rules, their consequences.

I had a listing flagged for review twice. Both times it was a false positive — my product was fine. But I had no recourse other than waiting. My store was effectively frozen for those products until Etsy resolved it.

On a platform you don't control, you're always one policy change or algorithm update away from watching revenue disappear.

Why I Tried MadeThis

But as soon as you know your products sell, start building your own storefront. The long-term math strongly favors owning your customer relationships and your traffic.

I wish I'd started on MadeThis from day one. I would have spent eight months building an asset instead of renting space on someone else's platform.
