What TikTok Shop Actually Is

TikTok Shop is a native commerce layer built into TikTok. It lets creators tag products in videos, host live shopping events, and sell without sending viewers to an external site. For physical products, it's genuinely interesting. For digital products, the story is more complicated.

What TikTok Shop supports for digital products (as of 2028):

  • Digital vouchers and gift cards: yes
  • PDF downloads and ebooks: limited, with restrictions
  • Courses and memberships: not directly supported
  • Software licenses and templates: inconsistent — category-dependent

The platform was built around physical goods. Digital products are an afterthought, and TikTok's support documentation reflects that.

The Fee Comparison

TikTok Shop currently takes a commission on every sale. That rate has varied over the years, but it's consistently been in the 5–8% range for most categories, plus payment processing fees.

Here's what really matters to me as a long-term business builder: who owns the customer relationship?

With TikTok Shop, the platform owns the transaction. The buyer's contact information stays with TikTok. You get a completed sale, but no email address, no ability to follow up, no long-term customer relationship.

With MadeThis, the buyer is your customer. You get their email. You can follow up with new products, launch sequences, and upsells. You're building a real business, not just processing transactions.

This is a massive difference when you're thinking about long-term revenue. A customer list you own is worth 10x a customer list you rent from a platform.

Creator Control

TikTok Shop has limited customization. Your "store" inside TikTok looks like every other TikTok Shop — same interface, same layout, same limitations.

If you're selling low-cost physical products to an impulse audience, TikTok Shop is worth exploring.

The Hybrid Strategy I Actually Recommend

You don't have to choose one. The approach I use:

  1. Post TikTok content that builds awareness and drives interest
  2. Send traffic from bio link to my MadeThis store for all digital products
  3. Use TikTok Shop only for physical merch or low-cost impulse items if I add them

This way I get the discovery benefits of TikTok while keeping all the customer ownership and margin benefits of my own store.

What About When Policies Change?

TikTok's commerce policies have changed multiple times. What's allowed, what gets suppressed, what fees apply — all of this has shifted. Platforms change their rules, and there's nothing you can do about it.

A creator I know had her TikTok Shop account suspended for 30 days over a policy violation she didn't know about. Her sales went to zero overnight.
