I've been making money online for two years now. Not get-rich-quick money — real, consistent income from a business I built from scratch. And I've been surrounded by the online business world long enough to know what the gurus aren't telling you.

Here's the truth. All of it.

It Takes Longer Than You Think — But Less Than You Fear

The $500/Month Milestone

Every course promises results in 30 days. Every income screenshot shows massive numbers. The reality: most people building a legitimate online income take 6–18 months to reach something meaningful.

My first month: $47 in revenue. Month six: $1,200. Month twelve: $3,400. Month eighteen: consistently over $4,000.

The trajectory is real. But it's not fast. Anyone who tells you they went from zero to $10K/month in 30 days is either leaving something out or selling you something.

The flip side: it takes less time than traditional career advancement. I didn't wait for someone else to promote me. I didn't need a degree or certification. I built something, and the market told me whether it was worth paying for.

You Don't Need a Huge Audience

This one surprised me. I had under 500 Twitter followers and no email list when I made my first $1,000.

How? Search engine traffic. People searching for specific answers found my content, clicked through to my products, and bought. They didn't care that I wasn't famous. They cared that my product solved their problem.

The internet has billions of people using it. You don't need a percentage of them. You need a tiny sliver — the people actively searching for what you offer. An email list of 300 engaged subscribers will outconvert 10,000 passive social followers.

The Product Has to Be Actually Good

This sounds obvious. It isn't.

A lot of people try to sell information they don't really have — they research a topic for a week, bundle it up, and wonder why no one buys. Buyers aren't stupid. Generic, shallow products don't sell at meaningful scale.

The products I've sold most successfully are the ones where I had genuine expertise. Things I'd figured out through real experience and failure. Buyers can tell the difference between "I researched this" and "I lived this."

Your depth of knowledge is your competitive advantage. Go deep on one thing. Be the person who actually figured out the problem — not the person who wrote a summary of other people's work.

The Real Work Is Content, Not the Product

I spent 80% of my energy on my first product. I should have spent 80% on content.

Products don't sell themselves. Traffic drives sales. And traffic — for a bootstrapped, no-ads business — comes from content: blog posts, SEO, newsletter, social presence.

The businesses that sustain over time have content engines running in the background: posts ranking on Google, videos being watched on YouTube, newsletters growing through word of mouth. That content brings buyers to the door automatically.

If I could go back, I'd write the product in 20% of the time I spent and use the rest to build the content machine from day one.

Consistency Beats Genius

I am not the smartest person in my niche. I'm not the most experienced. But I've been publishing content consistently for two years while most of my early competitors quit after six months.

Showing up consistently is the single most under-rated competitive advantage in online business. Most people give up. Most people stop when results are slow. Most people restart constantly instead of persisting.

The blog posts I wrote in month one are still driving traffic today. The email list I started in month two has compounded into thousands of subscribers. Every piece of work I did early on is still earning.

The Platform You Choose Matters

I wasted three months on the wrong platform before I found MadeThis. I was using a marketplace that charged high transaction fees and gave me limited control over my store. Switching to MadeThis — a platform built specifically for digital product businesses — changed the economics.

Flat pricing instead of percentage fees. A professional storefront that looks like a real business. AI tools that help me improve my positioning and pricing. The platform is one of the decisions that actually matters.

Nobody Owes You Customers

This is the hardest one. You can build a great product, list it correctly, price it well, and still not make sales for a while. That's not failure — that's the market telling you to keep working on distribution.

Your customers don't know you exist yet. Your job is to make sure they can find you. That means SEO, community presence, consistent content. It means playing a long game.

The people who succeed at online business aren't the ones who never struggle. They're the ones who kept going when the results weren't there yet.

The Summary

Here's what's actually true:

  • It works, but it takes longer than they tell you
  • You don't need a big audience — you need the right people finding you
  • The product has to be genuinely good
  • Content is the engine; the product is the destination
  • Consistency is the edge that almost no one maintains
  • Platform and infrastructure choices affect your long-term economics
  • There are no shortcuts — only compressed timelines through good decisions

The opportunity is real. The path is real. It just looks different from the success story screenshots.

If you're ready to start for real, MadeThis is the platform I'd use — built for people who want to build a legitimate business, not just a listing on a marketplace.
