A micro-SaaS is a small software tool that solves a specific problem for a specific audience, delivered as a subscription. Examples:
- A tool that automatically converts blog posts to LinkedIn carousels
- A Notion template marketplace with an automation layer
- A Chrome extension that rewords emails in your brand voice
- A simple invoicing tool built for a single industry (plumbers, photographers, etc.)
The key word is micro. You're not building the next Salesforce. You're building a focused tool for a defined audience willing to pay $19–$99/month for it.
What Is a Digital Product Business?
A digital product is anything you create once and sell infinitely: ebooks, templates, guides, courses, swipe files, toolkits, workflows.
The business model is simpler: you create a product, host it on a platform, drive traffic through SEO or social media, and collect sales with no additional work per unit sold.
AI makes this faster: what used to take weeks to produce now takes days. And with the right platform, the entire operation can run with minimal overhead.
The Honest Comparison
Time to First Revenue
Digital products win. You can create and launch a digital product in a week or less. Micro-SaaS development — even with AI tools — takes months before you have something shippable.
Technical Requirements
Digital products win. You need zero coding ability to create and sell an ebook, template, or course. Micro-SaaS requires either code you write yourself or you hire/partner with a developer. AI lowers this bar significantly, but it doesn't eliminate it.
Failure Risk
Digital products win. If your digital product doesn't sell, you've lost weeks of time. If your micro-SaaS doesn't find customers after 6 months of building, you've lost months of time and potentially significant money.

I've built in both spaces. The digital product model consistently outperforms expectations for most people — especially beginners — because the feedback loop is fast, the barrier is low, and AI has made production genuinely effortless.
Micro-SaaS is a real business model with real upside, but the advice to "just build a micro-SaaS" glosses over the hard parts. Finding a problem worth solving, building something people will actually pay for, and competing with better-funded tools is harder than it looks.
