Three of the most common platforms beginners consider when starting a digital product business: Gumroad, Payhip, and MadeThis. I've used all three at different stages. Here's the complete breakdown.
Quick Orientation
Gumroad is the OG. It's been around since 2011 and built a massive creator ecosystem. Simple, marketplace-optional, with a large existing audience.

Payhip is the budget-friendly alternative to Gumroad — even lower fees, similar simplicity, strong for basic digital downloads.
MadeThis is the newest of the three and the most full-featured — built for solo creators who want a complete business platform, not just a checkout page.

Pricing Breakdown
Gumroad: Free plan available with a 10% transaction fee. Paid plan reduces this. Their recent pricing changes have been controversial — the fee model has shifted multiple times, and the 10% cut on the free tier is steep for higher-volume sellers.
Payhip: Free plan with a 5% transaction fee. Paid plans start at $29/month with zero transaction fees. For low-volume sellers, the free tier is genuinely useful.
MadeThis: Subscription-based with low transaction fees on paid plans. No free tier, but the feature set is significantly broader. See current pricing at /madethis-pricing.
The math for a $97 product:
- Gumroad free: you keep ~$87 after their cut
- Payhip free: you keep ~$92 after their cut
- MadeThis paid: you keep ~$95+ depending on plan
At low volume, the free-tier platforms win on cost. At higher volume (20+ sales/month), the subscription model typically beats the percentage-based models.
Marketplace Traffic
Gumroad's biggest advantage over the other two: their marketplace. Gumroad Discover surfaces products to Gumroad's user base. If you list something that fits their audience, you can get organic discovery without any marketing effort.
Payhip and MadeThis don't have marketplace discovery. You drive your own traffic.
The tradeoff: marketplace traffic is real but competitive. Lower-priced products and certain categories (design assets, writing templates) do well. Higher-priced courses or niche guides may not get much marketplace traction even on Gumroad.
Where Each Platform Excels
Gumroad: Best for creators who want marketplace discovery and are already producing content their audience is searching for. The platform has gravity — people browse it to find things to buy.
Payhip: Best for cost-conscious beginners who want to test a product concept without any monthly fees. The 5% cut is fair for low-volume sellers, and the platform is easy to use.
MadeThis: Best for creators who want to build a real business — not just test a product. The AI tools, email marketing, and complete platform experience are designed for long-term growth, not just getting a first product listed.
Who Each Platform Is Actually For
Use Gumroad if: You're a content creator with an existing audience, your product category has marketplace traction, and you want discovery without marketing spend.
Use Payhip if: You're testing a product idea on zero budget and want the lowest-cost entry point possible.
Use MadeThis if: You're serious about building a digital product business, you want AI tools to help you move faster, and you want everything in one platform without integrations.
My Honest Recommendation
For the purpose of this comparison: if you're just testing a product idea and want to spend $0 to start, Payhip's free tier is hard to beat.
But if you're building a business — not just listing a file — MadeThis is where I'd start. The AI co-founder feature accelerates product creation. The built-in email marketing eliminates a separate tool. The platform grows with you in a way that Gumroad and Payhip simply don't.
I wrote a full review of the platform at /reviews/madethis if you want more detail on what the day-to-day experience looks like. And for a broader view of the alternatives landscape, check out /madethis-alternatives.
The short version: Gumroad and Payhip are fine starting tools. MadeThis is a platform you build on.
