Is MadeThis the Right Platform for Your Online Business? (Honest Review)

I've been using MadeThis as my primary platform for over a year now. I've also tried alternatives before landing here. This is my honest review — including what it does well, where it falls short, and who I'd actually recommend it to.

This isn't a sponsored post and I'm not going to pretend there are no limitations. But I'll tell you why I'm still using it and why I'd recommend it to most people starting a digital product business.

What MadeThis Actually Is

MadeThis is an all-in-one platform for building and selling digital products online. It handles:

  • Product creation and delivery
  • Payment processing
  • Storefront/product pages
  • Basic email automation
  • Customer management
  • Subscriptions and memberships

The pitch is that you don't need to stitch together Gumroad + ConvertKit + a separate website + Stripe. MadeThis does all of it in one place.

Whether that pitch holds up in practice is what this review is about.

What MadeThis Does Well

Clean, Fast Setup

I had my first product live within a few hours of signing up. No developer needed, no hosting to configure, no integrations to wire up. The product pages look professional without requiring design skills.

For someone who wants to go from idea to live product quickly, this is the biggest selling point.

Automated Delivery That Just Works

Every time someone buys, they get access to the product immediately. Automatic. No manual sending, no failed delivery notifications, no customer emails saying "I didn't get my download."

I've been on platforms where delivery is flakey — not MadeThis. In 14 months, I've had zero delivery failures.

Subscription and Membership Support

This is a meaningful differentiator. MadeThis handles recurring billing — subscriptions, memberships, renewals, cancellations — without requiring a separate subscription management tool.

If you want to build any kind of recurring revenue model, this is a feature worth having on the platform natively.

Fee Structure That Makes Sense at Scale

MadeThis charges a flat monthly fee rather than a percentage of sales. As your revenue grows, you keep more of it. At $5,000/month in sales, the fee difference between a percentage platform and MadeThis is several hundred dollars — that compounds.

See the MadeThis pricing page for the current numbers.

What MadeThis Is Not Perfect For

Advanced Email Marketing

The native email features in MadeThis work for basic sequences and purchase follow-ups. If you want complex segmentation, advanced behavioral triggers, or robust broadcast analytics, you'll eventually want a dedicated email tool alongside it.

I use Kit for my broader email list. MadeThis handles the purchase-triggered sequences, Kit handles the rest.

Full Blog/SEO Capabilities

MadeThis is built for selling products, not for SEO-heavy content publishing. If you want a blog with full SEO optimization, you'll likely need a separate blog setup — which is what I do with this site.

The question is whether that matters for your use case. For a lot of sellers, the product page and checkout is all they need on MadeThis — the content lives elsewhere.

Physical Products

MadeThis is digital-first. If you sell physical products, this isn't the right platform. It handles digital downloads, access products, subscriptions, and memberships well. Not physical inventory.

How It Compares to Alternatives

vs. Gumroad: Gumroad is simpler to start with but takes a percentage of every sale. At any meaningful revenue level, MadeThis's flat fee wins on math. See the MadeThis vs Gumroad comparison for details.

vs. Shopify: Shopify is built for ecommerce and physical products. If digital products are your focus, Shopify is overkill and more expensive. The MadeThis vs Shopify comparison breaks this down.

vs. Kajabi: Kajabi is a strong platform but priced for high-revenue businesses. MadeThis is more accessible if you're not yet generating thousands per month. See MadeThis vs Kajabi.

Who I'd Recommend MadeThis To

MadeThis is a great fit if:

  • You're selling digital products (ebooks, templates, courses, memberships, downloads)
  • You want everything in one place without managing five tools
  • You're at early or intermediate stage and don't need enterprise features
  • You want to eventually move to a recurring revenue model (subscriptions/memberships)
  • You'd rather pay a flat fee than a percentage of sales

MadeThis might not be the best fit if:

  • You need advanced email automation features natively
  • You're selling physical products
  • You're already at very high revenue and need enterprise features
  • You want a full website/blog CMS built into the platform

My Experience After 14 Months

The honest summary: MadeThis removed the operational overhead that was eating my time.

Before: four different tools, constant integration issues, delivery problems, platform management overhead. After: one login, everything works, I spend my time on products and content instead of managing infrastructure.

For the stage I was at when I switched — and for the stage most people reading this are at — that tradeoff is exactly right.

The Pricing Question

I know price is always part of the decision. Here's my honest take: the flat monthly fee is worth it once you're making more than a few hundred dollars a month in product sales.

Before you're generating revenue, any cost feels high. The math changes fast once you're selling.

Check the current MadeThis pricing and do the math for your expected revenue. For most digital product sellers at $1,000+/month, the platform pays for itself many times over in time saved and fees avoided.

The Bottom Line

MadeThis is the platform I use and recommend for most digital product sellers. It's not perfect for every use case, but for the core job — selling digital products, handling delivery, managing customers, running subscriptions — it does it better than the alternatives I've tried.

If you're evaluating platforms, start with the free trial and see how the setup feels. The experience of actually using it is the best evidence.
