How to Start an Online Business With Literally $0 in 2028

The most common reason people don't start is money. Or the idea that they need money.

I started my first online business with $0. No paid tools. No ad budget. No course that taught me some special method. Just free platforms, free traffic, and a lot of trial and error.

This post is going to be specific. Not "use social media to grow your audience" specific — actually specific. Tool names, steps, order of operations.

The Honest Starting Point

First, let me set expectations. Starting with $0 means starting slower. You'll rely on organic traffic, which takes time to build. You won't have premium tools that save you hours. Some things will take three times as long as they would with a $50/month budget.

But slow is not impossible. And the constraints force you to learn the fundamentals — what actually drives traffic, what actually converts, what actually makes people buy — without being able to throw money at the problem.

What you're going to build: a digital product (something you create once and sell indefinitely) hosted on a free storefront, marketed through free content channels.

Step 1: Pick What to Sell

Digital products are the only product category you can sell for $0 upfront. No inventory, no manufacturing, no shipping. You create the file, you upload it, someone buys it and downloads it.

What kind? Start with what you know. A template, a checklist, a short guide, a collection of resources. The format matters less than the specificity. "Email marketing guide" is less valuable than "email marketing guide for freelance graphic designers."

If you're drawing a blank, scroll through Reddit, Quora, or Facebook groups in a topic you know. What questions come up repeatedly? That's a product.

Step 2: Set Up Your Free Storefront

MadeThis has a free plan. You can list products, accept payments, and deliver digital files without spending anything. When you're starting from $0, this is where I'd go first.

The setup takes under an hour. You don't need a domain, you don't need to know how to code, you don't need to design anything from scratch. Upload your product, write a product description, set your price, publish.

That's your business.

Step 3: Get Free Traffic

Here's where the work comes in. Free traffic requires consistent effort instead of money. The main sources that work in 2028 for new creators with zero budget:

Pinterest: Create 3–5 pins per week that link to your product page. Pinterest is a search engine masquerading as a social platform. Your pins can drive traffic for months or years after you post them. Use Canva (free) to design them.

Reddit and Quora: Find threads where people ask questions your product answers. Give a genuinely helpful response. Don't spam links — be useful first. Add your link when it's directly relevant. Done consistently, this drives real traffic.

Short-form social: TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts. Record a 30–60 second video about the specific problem your product solves. Link in bio to your MadeThis storefront. No equipment required beyond a phone.

SEO / blog content: If you can write, publishing helpful articles that rank in Google is the most durable traffic source. Takes time to kick in (3–6 months), but pays off indefinitely. You can host a blog on a free platform to start.

Pick one channel and go deep before adding a second. The biggest mistake beginners make is spreading thin across five platforms and getting traction on none.

Step 4: Build a Free Email List

Email is the asset that makes everything else more valuable. An email list is something you own — no algorithm changes it, no platform shuts it off.

Free email service: Mailchimp has a free plan up to 500 contacts. ConvertKit has a free plan too. Use either.

How to build it: create a free version of your paid product (a shorter guide, a sample template, one tool from your pack) and offer it as a free download in exchange for an email address. Link to the opt-in from your social content and your product page.

What This Looks Like in Month 3

If you do all of this consistently — posting on one platform, engaging on Reddit/Quora, building an email list — here's what's realistic by month three:

  • 100–300 email subscribers
  • 200–500 monthly visitors to your product page
  • 5–15 sales at $27–$47 each
  • Revenue: $135–$705/month

That's not quit-your-job money. But it's real money from a standing start with $0 invested.

And it compounds. The email list grows. The content keeps driving traffic. The sales increase each month as the audience grows.

For the longer-term roadmap from here, I mapped out the full path from $0 to $1,000 in 90 days. And if you're trying to figure out which tools are worth eventually paying for (and when), I break that down in my shoestring budget business guide.

Start Today

You don't need money. You need a product idea, a free MadeThis account, and a commitment to posting on one platform consistently for 90 days.

Most people won't do all three. That's why most people don't make money online. The ones who do are usually just the ones who showed up consistently when nothing was working yet.

Start today.
