How to Start a Newsletter and Make Money From It
I started a newsletter before I had a product, a following, or any real traffic. By month six, it was generating a meaningful chunk of my monthly income — not through ads or sponsorships, but through the digital products I sold to that list.
Here's what I learned.
Why a Newsletter Is Still One of the Best Business Assets

Email is often declared dead. It keeps outperforming every other channel for direct-to-audience sales.
Why:
- You own the list — no algorithm can cut off your reach
- Email open rates average 20–40% depending on your niche; social organic reach is often under 2%
- Your subscribers opted in specifically — they want to hear from you
- Email converts better than almost any other channel for direct product sales
The newsletter isn't the business. It's the relationship infrastructure that makes the business work.
Picking Your Newsletter Topic
The right topic is specific, consistent, and interesting to a specific kind of person.
Too broad: "Business and productivity" Too narrow: "Monday morning habits for left-handed female accountants in rural Oregon" Just right: "One unconventional business idea every week, explained in 5 minutes"
Your topic should pass this test: can you describe exactly who reads this newsletter and what they get from it in one sentence?
Mine was: "Weekly tactics for building a one-person digital business without burning out."
Setting Up in One Afternoon
The tech is not the hard part.
Newsletter platforms I've used:
- Beehiiv — My current recommendation for growth-focused newsletters. Great monetization tools, referral programs, and SEO pages built in. Free tier is generous.
- Substack — Great for content-first writers. Built-in discovery. Takes 10% if you run paid subscriptions.
- ConvertKit — Better for people who also sell products and want tight email sequence control. Slightly more complex but more powerful.
Pick one. Set up your free account today. Don't overthink it — you can migrate later.
Writing the First Issues
Your first three issues matter more than any that follow. They set the expectation.
A simple structure that works:
- One main insight — the thing you've learned or noticed this week
- Why it matters — the stakes and the context
- Practical takeaway — what readers can do with this
- One interesting link — something you found useful this week
Keep it under 600 words to start. The goal is consistency, not length.
Publish on the same day, every week. Predictability is how you build a habit in your readers.
Growing Your List Without Paying for Ads
Organic growth strategies that actually worked for me:
1. Lead magnet on your website or blog. Create one free resource related to your newsletter topic — a checklist, a short guide, a template — and offer it as the reason to subscribe. This converts blog readers into email subscribers.
2. SEO blog posts with email capture. Write long-form content targeting search terms your audience uses. At the bottom of every post, invite readers to subscribe for more. My blog drives the majority of my new subscribers.
3. Cross-promotion. Find newsletters in adjacent niches (same audience, different topic) and do a swap — they mention you, you mention them. This is underused and works well.
4. Social profile link. Your newsletter link in your bio on every platform you're on. Small but consistent.
How to Make Money From Your Newsletter
Here's where most newsletter advice goes wrong: it focuses on sponsorships and ads. Unless you have 10,000+ subscribers, that model is a distraction.
The model that actually works at a smaller scale:
Digital products — Sell an ebook, template, course, or guide to your subscribers. Your list is your warmest audience. Conversion rates from email to product purchase are dramatically higher than from cold traffic.
Affiliate partnerships — Recommend products you genuinely use and earn a commission. Be honest about it (disclosure builds trust, not skepticism).
Paid newsletter tiers — Once you have an engaged audience, some of them will pay for a premium tier with deeper content. Substack and Beehiiv both support this.
My main revenue driver was (and still is) selling digital products to my list. I use MadeThis as my product platform — it handles the store, checkout, and delivery. My newsletter drives the traffic; MadeThis converts it.
The Honest Timeline
Month 1–2: You're writing for a small list. This is normal. Focus on quality and consistency.
Month 3–4: Subscribers from organic sources start arriving. Your first product pitch to the list.
Month 6: You have a real asset. A list of engaged people who trust your recommendations.
Month 9–12: The list is a meaningful part of your income engine — either direct product sales or as a warm audience for new launches.
This is not a get-rich-quick model. It's a build-something-real model. The difference shows up around month 6.
Ready to start? Pick a topic, pick a platform, write issue number one. The rest is iteration.
If you're building digital products alongside your newsletter, MadeThis is the platform I'd pair with it — designed for exactly the kind of business this creates.
