I quit my job 14 months into building my digital product business.

I'm not telling you that to sell you something — I'm telling you because I want you to understand this is a real, achievable goal. Not a fantasy. Not a highlight reel. A thing that happens to regular people who build the right systems with patience and consistency.

Here's how it actually went, what milestones I hit, and what I'd tell someone starting today.

First, The Honest Version of the Story

I didn't quit dramatically. I didn't burn the boats. I built my digital product business for over a year while keeping my job, saving aggressively, and watching my online income grow slowly and then quickly.

The moment I knew it was time: for three consecutive months, my online income exceeded my after-tax job income. That's the metric I'd set for myself 14 months earlier. When I hit it, I gave notice.

I had 6 months of expenses saved before I quit. I'm glad I had that cushion. The first month after quitting, my income actually dipped — because I was adjusting to a new routine and overthinking everything. Month two I course-corrected. By month four I was making more than I ever had.

But the stability of the cushion meant I didn't make panicked decisions. I want to say that clearly: don't quit until you have savings. The income is real, but it fluctuates.

The Milestones That Matter

Here's the roadmap I'd give someone starting from zero today:

Milestone 1: First product live ($0) Create your first digital product and list it on MadeThis. This sounds obvious but most people never get here. The product doesn't have to be perfect. It has to exist.

Milestone 2: First sale ($X) Your first sale is a mindset shift, not a money shift. It proves the model is real. When you make your first sale, you're no longer hypothesizing — you're operating.

Milestone 3: Consistent $500/month This is when you know you have something. $500/month from digital products means people are finding you, buying from you, and your content is working. It usually takes 4–8 months of consistent effort to get here.

Milestone 4: $2,000/month for 3 consecutive months At $2,000/month, you have a serious side business. You've almost certainly got 3+ products, an SEO content strategy generating organic traffic, and some form of audience (email list, social, or search traffic). This milestone usually means the systems are working.

Milestone 5: Replace your job income for 3 consecutive months This is the "quit-ready" signal. Not once. Three times in a row, consistently. Then give notice — ideally with 3–6 months saved.

What You Actually Need to Build

To get from zero to quit-your-job income, you need:

Multiple products. One product can't carry a business to $3,000–$5,000/month unless it's a high-ticket offer. Most people need 5–10 products across different price points.

Organic traffic. SEO-driven blog content is the engine. I wrote consistently for 12+ months before quitting. My posts compound over time — old content keeps sending traffic and sales.

An email list. Even a small email list (300–500 people) is a serious asset. New product announcements to a warm list convert at much higher rates than cold traffic.

A reliable platform. This is non-negotiable. You need checkout that works, delivery that's automatic, and product pages that convert. I use MadeThis for this. For a full breakdown of why, see my MadeThis review.

The Questions I Get Asked Most

"How much do I need saved before I quit?" My rule: 6 months of living expenses, minimum. Some people do it with 3 months and succeed. I wouldn't.

"What if my income drops after I quit?" It might, temporarily. This is why savings matter. Also: the extra time you have when you're not working a full-time job will accelerate your business. Most people see income growth within 3 months of quitting.

"What if I can't get my income high enough before my job situation becomes untenable?" Then negotiate more time at your job (reduced hours, extended runway) or reduce your expenses to make your savings last longer. Don't quit before you're ready just because you're emotionally burned out. The digital product business needs you at your best.

"What niche should I build in?" Something you know and care about enough to create consistent content for 1–2 years. The niche matters less than the consistency.

The Platform Foundation

Building a business you can actually quit your job for requires serious infrastructure. I moved everything to MadeThis about 8 months into my journey and that upgrade made the business feel more legitimate — to me and to customers.

Professional product pages. Clean checkout. Instant delivery. AI tools for product copy. These aren't luxuries when you're building something serious. They're the baseline.

If you want to compare it to alternatives before committing, compare/madethis-vs-gumroad has the breakdown.

It's Real. Start Now.

I know this post is long. Here's the short version: building a digital product business that lets you quit your job is real. It takes 12–24 months of serious, consistent work. It requires multiple products, a content strategy, and patience through the slow early months.

But it works. I did it. People I know did it. You can do it.

The first step is the same as the last step: build something and put it in front of people. MadeThis is where I'd start. Create your account, build your first product, and start the clock.

Fourteen months from now, you can be somewhere very different.
