Life coaching is a field where the income ceiling is usually set by time, not demand. There are plenty of people who want coaching — but if you're only doing 1-on-1 sessions, you can only serve so many.
The coaches I've seen break through that ceiling have one thing in common: they turned their methodology into products.
Here's how I'd build an online income as a life coach in 2028.

The Problem With 1-on-1 Only
One-on-one coaching is valuable, and if you're good at it, it's great income. But it's also exhausting at scale, difficult to systemize, and entirely dependent on your time and energy being present in every session.
If you get sick, take a vacation, or simply don't want to work 40 hours a week in sessions, your income stops. That's not a sustainable long-term business for most people.
The fix isn't to stop coaching. It's to build income streams that run alongside your coaching practice — products and programs that earn money without requiring you to show up live for every single interaction.
Digital Product #1: Workbooks and Journals
This is the natural starting point for most coaches. Take the frameworks, questions, and exercises you use in your sessions and turn them into a workbook or journal.
"The Clarity Workbook: 30 Days of Questions to Help You Figure Out What You Actually Want" is a real product that a real audience will pay $19–$29 for. You already do this work in sessions. Packaging it as a PDF is mostly a formatting and design exercise.
These sell well on their own and work even better as entry-points into your world — someone who buys a $19 workbook and finds it useful is a warm lead for your $500 coaching package.
I'd host workbooks and PDFs on MadeThis. Fast setup, instant delivery, no monthly cost to start. See my MadeThis review for what the platform actually looks like.
Digital Product #2: Self-Paced Programs
A self-paced coaching program is a structured video and workbook series that guides someone through a specific transformation. It's essentially your coaching methodology, packaged into a course format that people can work through on their own timeline.
This is the highest-leverage product for most coaches because:
- It can be priced at $97–$497 or more
- It scales without your active time
- It positions you as an authority in your niche
- It creates a pipeline of people who may want to work with you 1-on-1 after completing the program
Niche matters hugely here. "The Career Pivot Program for Women in Their 40s" or "A 12-Week Confidence Reset for Introverted Professionals" converts much better than a generic life coaching course. The more specific the promise, the better.
MadeThis supports bundled products where you can combine video files, workbook PDFs, and bonus resources into one cohesive purchase.
Digital Product #3: Templates and Frameworks
If you use specific frameworks in your coaching — a goal-setting template, a values discovery worksheet, a "wheel of life" assessment with action planning pages — those can be sold standalone.
Keep these lower-priced ($7–$27) to attract buyers who aren't ready to invest in a full program. Once they've experienced your methodology and found it useful, they're far more likely to upgrade.
Digital Product #4: Group Programs
Group coaching is a model that many coaches overlook. Instead of 1-on-1 sessions, you run a cohort of 10–20 people through a structured program together — live calls, a shared community, and accountability partners built in.
You can charge $300–$1,000+ per participant for a well-structured group program, and serve 15 people in the same time it takes to serve 2–3 in 1-on-1 sessions. The economics are significantly better.
This isn't a passive income stream — it requires your live presence — but it's a much higher-leverage use of your time than traditional 1-on-1 work.
Building an Audience as a Life Coach
The core challenge for coaches is visibility. You can be excellent at your work, but if people don't know you exist, you won't sell anything.
Content marketing: Write or record content about the specific problems your clients face — not generic "mindset tips," but specific, honest takes on real challenges. People searching "how to stop people-pleasing at work" or "why I can't make decisions" are looking for exactly the kind of clarity a coach offers.
Email list: Build one from day one. Offer a free resource — a free mini-workbook, a free values assessment, a free clarity exercise — in exchange for email signups. That list becomes your most consistent sales channel.
Instagram and LinkedIn: Coaching content that's specific and personal resonates. Share what you've learned, what your clients struggle with (anonymized), and your honest perspective on transformation.
My post on best tools for your first $1,000 online covers the full infrastructure side — email platforms, analytics, selling tools — if you want the complete picture.
Where to Start
If I were a life coach starting today, I'd do this:
- Identify the one transformation I'm most known for helping clients achieve
- Create a workbook or mini-guide around that transformation
- Price it at $19–$27
- Get it live on MadeThis
- Share it genuinely with my existing network and in relevant communities
You'll learn more from putting one real product in front of real buyers than from months of planning. The feedback loop is invaluable, and the first sale is more motivating than any business plan.
The longer road — group programs, signature courses, high-ticket packages — gets easier once you know what your audience actually wants. Start simple, learn fast, and build from there.
