Can You Really Make Money With AI? My Honest Take

I've seen every version of this question. People asking with genuine curiosity, people who've been burned by "AI passive income" promises, and people who are skeptical of the whole thing after watching too many YouTube thumbnails with Lamborghinis.

Here's my actual answer, from someone who uses AI tools as a core part of running a real online business.

Yes, you can make money with AI. But not in the way that most people describe.

What AI Can't Do

Let me start here, because the honest answer has to include the caveats.

AI doesn't generate income by itself. You can't set up a ChatGPT bot, point it at an "AI business," and walk away while money accumulates. That framing is marketing for courses and tools, not reality.

AI also doesn't replace the need for a real product that solves a real problem. If you don't have something worth selling — a guide that genuinely helps, a service that actually delivers results, a product someone needs — no amount of AI tooling will make up for that.

And AI-generated content, without your editorial judgment and real expertise mixed in, is increasingly easy to identify. Google's gotten better at detecting generic AI content. More importantly, readers can feel the difference between something written by someone who actually knows what they're talking about and something that's just plausible-sounding text.

What AI Actually Does

Here's what AI genuinely enables, in my experience:

Faster execution. Tasks that used to take me hours — writing a blog post, drafting an email sequence, creating a product description, outlining a new digital guide — now take a fraction of the time. That compression of execution time is real and substantial.

Lower cost to start. Before AI, building a content business required either a lot of time or hiring writers, designers, and marketers. AI tools have dramatically lowered the barrier. A solo operator can now produce what a small team used to produce.

Better thinking. I use AI to pressure-test ideas, spot gaps in my reasoning, and generate options I wouldn't have considered. It's like having a fast, tireless thinking partner who can hold a lot of context.

More capacity for strategy. When AI handles the mechanical first-draft work, I have more mental bandwidth for the things that actually differentiate a business — understanding customers, making positioning decisions, building relationships.

The Real Opportunity

The money from AI isn't in "AI" as a category. It's in using AI tools to build a business in whatever niche you actually know well.

Digital products and content businesses are particularly well-suited to AI leverage because they're knowledge-based and content-heavy. If you can use AI to create ebooks, guides, templates, or blog content faster — and your underlying knowledge and judgment are genuine — you have a real advantage over competitors who are grinding the same work manually.

I use MadeThis.com to sell the digital products I create. The platform handles checkout, delivery, and product pages. AI helps me create the content that goes into those products. The combination — good product, fast execution, simple distribution — is what actually generates income.

Who This Works For

It works best for people who have domain knowledge in something — anything — and are willing to translate that knowledge into products and content. You don't need to be famous, technical, or born with an audience.

It doesn't work well for people who are looking for a way to generate money without bringing anything real to the table. There's no version of this that's truly passive from the start.

My Honest Bottom Line

AI is one of the most significant leverage tools for online business that has appeared in my lifetime. The time compression alone would justify the cost of the tools. The additional capabilities — research, ideation, automation — make it even more valuable.

But leverage multiplies what you're already doing. If you're doing real work in a real business, AI makes you faster and more capable. If you're doing nothing, AI gives you faster nothing.

Start with a real business model. Then add AI as your execution layer. That's the actual formula.
